Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association and National Shellfish Association-Pacific Coast Section Annual Shellfish Conference & Tradeshow, October 6-8, 2020

Join Searen for the 74th annual Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association annual conference and tradeshow October 6th - 8th, 2020. This year’s conference is virtual with early bird sign-up ending September 15th, 2020.

VAL™ expert, Dr. Bertrand Barrut, will be presenting Wednesday, October 7th at 9:45 AM PST on: Shellfish Depuration Efficiency Using Vacuum Airlift™ Technology.

The Vacuum AirLift™ or VAL™ is an innovative technology that improves the water quality and effectiveness of shellfish depuration while substantially lowering the energy consumption. This revolutionary technology is quickly becoming the standard in Europe and Africa. Below are the testimonials from two recent VAL™ installations for shellfish depuration systems.

Company: Keraliou

Location: Plougastel, Britany, France

"The VAL solution enabled the transition to closed circuit. Today we can shelter and maintain in perfect sanitary conditions up to 50 tonnes of shellfish per day, with great water quality and low operational cost."

-Thierry Larnicol, Owner

Company: Sanchez-Huitres

Location: Montpelier, France

"Our new building includes 60,500 gallons of shellfish purification tanks, for a total volume of 113,150 gallons to be treated, pumped directly from the lagoon. The initial plans included the conventional sand filter pumps and UV treatment systems. Switching from these technologies to the VAL™ has enabled us to consume 8X less energy, and a higher performance in terms of water quality, both in filtration and purification as well as in oxygenation."

-Guy Sanchez - G.M. Major French Oyster Producer

In shellfish farming, pathogens such as bacteria and viruses can collect in the organism. Prior to human consumption, the shellfish must be depurated to remove these contaminants. Traditional depuration systems are usually composed of sand filtration or skimmers and UV or ozone generators. The Vacuum Airlift™ technology (VAL™) is an innovative patented technology developed for water treatment applications such as dissolved gas management, suspended solids removal, and dissolved organics matter removal for water clarification and biosecurity. The VAL™ is able to remove 99.9% of bacterial load in 12 hours (e.g. decreasing E. coli from 16750 u/ml to 27 u/ml). The VAL™ will also remove viruses and clarify the water. This yields a significant increase in UV efficiency. In closed systems, the VAL™ also provides efficient CO2 stripping and O2 replenishment (concentration up to 95%). The VAL™ restores the O2 consumed by the shellfish biomass as a result of the high mass transfer coefficient between micro bubbling and water. Combined with supplemental UV, the VAL™ is a promising tool for shellfish depuration with high efficiency and low energy consumption.
